What a summer
Well the dog days of August are upon us.  Great times with great people.  That sums up my summer.  My mind has been wandering from swimming in the sun to sitting in an ice fog waiting for birds.  I am done with puffin cruises for the year.  I will be scouting/fishing during late August.

Puffins

Now offering Puffin cruises.  2-4 people only. $75 per person.  3 hours on the water.  I meet you at the ramp, we cruise the sound, out to the puffin island, looking at seals, porpises, and seabirds.  We circle the puffin island several times, making sure everyone gets the pictures they want.  You will get to see other seabirds as well.  Then we cruise back in by some great scenery taking pictures.  We take or time and enjoy the coast of Maine.

Illegal stocking
I am just back from up north.  Mine and Pams favorite camping site, which happens to be on a pond that has naturally occuring landlocked arctic charr.  The fishing has been great in the past with plenty of fish.  Well someone put smelt in the pond, and now the fishing is less then bad.  The smelt eat all the tout eggs.  Illegal stocking of fish in Maine is a real problem.  Muskie, pike, crappie none of these fish naturally occur in Maine.  People need to stop adjusting nature to their own wants.  I am truly disgusted and disappointed about 'my' pond.  IFW is doing what they can but the outlokk is bleak.

SALMON

Fishing is red hot right now!  If you want to do some traditional salmon trolling, now is the time!  I have also secured written permission on some 'new' turkey hunting grounds.  With a 2 bird limit possible this is shaping up to be a very productive spring!

SLOW TIME OF YEAR
It is our slow time of year.  That is about to end.  Maines spring fishing opened on March 25th and Flyline fishing charters is going to start trolling for landlock salmon the end of this week, probably Thursday, the traditional opener of April 1st.  I have begun locating turkeys as well, although it is still a week or two too soon.  I will start locating birds in earnest on April 12th.  I have been plugging away at another five jumbo cork eiders for the rig.  Four will be common eiders and one will be a jumbo king eider modeled after the legendary 'beast from the east'.  That name was coined by Shane Smith the top king eider taxidermist alive today.  We are offering a 3day traveling hunt this year.  This is going to be a collectors dream hunt.  One day hunting in Casco bay, one day on Muscle Ridge Shoal and one day out on Deer Isle. Book your spot early as these are going to be 2 person only hunts.

Ice fishing and snowmobiling is bust with no snow cover in southern/central Maine.  Plus the ice is rotting fast.  I have decided to stop ice fishing for the year for reasons of safety.  So it is slow right now, with photography, crow and predator hunting keeping us from getting cabin fever.  To early for turkey scouting however that is right around the corner.  Dont forget to put in your moose lottery applications.

Mid season report
This has been a great season so far.  Last week Joe Ruggeri returned with the goal of a king eider in the bag.  Joe always has good luck.  Well this year he passed his luck onto his buddy the other Joe (Pepe')  Pepe' bagged a drake eider banded on 8-27-03 in Maine.  15 minutes later when the limits had been met and decoys where being retrieved, a drake king eider made an apperance.  Maybe next year Joe

Update

The season is going well.  I have been seeing all 5 seaduck speices.  Longtailed ducks are in, and in huge numbers this year.  Anyone interested in a 7 Longtail limit should get up here ASAP.  The new jumbo cork eiders are very effective decoying birds.  No unusual birds yet to report but it is early still in the season.
